Aki Takase/Alexander von Schlippenbach

Of all the recordings made over the seven years that our piano duo has been in existence, two live recordings from the years 1993 and 1994 have turned out, after frequent and critical listening, to be musically the strongest and technically the most accurate, and were therefore chosen for this, our first Duo CD.

The first three compositions, "Na Na Na Na… . ist das der Weg", "The Morlocks", and Frank Zappa's "You are what you is" were recorded an two full-size Bechstein grand pianos on March 13, 1993 in the Gethsemane church in Berlin and have been left in the same sequence as that of the concert performance.

The following "Tales of Something", the Monk Medley with "Mysterioso"', "Ask me now"(Aki Takase - Solo), "Pannonica"(Alex von Schlippenbach - Solo) and "Evidence" as well as "Chapelure Japonaise" were recorded live on December 9,1994 during a public broadcast.

Certain structures of "Morlocks", the developed out of the prepared piano sounds employing special techniques, were later also used orchestrally; they also form the basis of "Chapelure Japonaise". On this concert, the Duo played two Steinway grand pianos.

We would like to express our thanks to the Jazz division of DeutschlandRadio Berlin and, in particular Barbara Rüger, for their helpful and willing cooperation during the production of this CD.
